Town Hall on Common Core

photoTulsa R3’s – Ron Paul Revolution

BARTLESVILLE – A group calling itself Bartians for Academic Freedom is hosting a town hall meeting this month at Oklahoma Wesleyan University with a group of speakers discussing the Common Core Curriculum in education.
The meeting is set for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at Lyon Performance Hall on the university campus, 2201 Silver Lake Road. Speakers for the evening include Oklahoma Wesleyan President Everett Piper, Jenni White, president of Restore Oklahoma Public Education, teacher Linda Murphy and parent Kristal Picolet.
Forty-five states, including Oklahoma, adopted the Common Core State Standards Initiative for teaching in public schools that sets guidelines stipulating what students in kindergarten through 12th grade should have learned in English and mathematics courses by the end of each grade. The initiative was sponsored by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. The methods first surfaced in 2009 and have received mixed reviews.
The forum, which is also sponsored by the statewide Restore Oklahoma group and by The Capital Meeting, is promoting a message against Common Core.
The group sees the initiative as taking away from local control and student privacy, nationalizing education, teaching unproven methods with developmentally inappropriate standards, removing some classic literature and cursive writing and being unfair to students with special needs.
