New group with a mission – Restoring Representative Goverment. It is a Petition group, that should be a bipartisan effort attracting support from ALL sides. Here’s the language:
Proposed Initiative Petition in the State of Oklahoma
Each Member of the State House of Representatives OR the State Senate shall have the unobstructed Right to a final vote on passage of a minimum of one Bill. This right applies in each Regular or Special Session, provided the primary Author requests such a vote in writing.
In a Regular Session, this Right shall be within the first 30 days upon written request by the primary Author. Upon passage by the Chamber of the primary Author the opposite Chamber shall hold a vote on final passage within the following 30 days.
In a Special Session, this Right shall be within the first 3 days upon written request by the primary Author and 1/5th of the other Members of the body (1/5th plus 1). Upon passage by the Chamber of the primary Author the opposite Chamber shall hold a vote on final passage prior to the end of Session or within 3 days, whichever is sooner.

Restore Representative Government registers with Ethics Commission
Organizers will file paperwork Monday, December 17, 2017, with the Oklahoma Ethics Commission to address the growing problem of special-interest money influencing the legislature and a small group of individuals determining which bills do and DO NOT receive a hearing for a vote. This makes the impact of special interest money and lobbyists much greater.
The multi-partisan group seeks to restore the voice of the people by circulating a citizen’s initiative petition early next year. The petition would create a Constitutional Amendment that guarantees every member of the legislature has the right to have at least one bill heard each year.
The public will be shocked to learn that their Representative and Senator is not guaranteed the right have even one bill heard in any given session. Citizens of Oklahoma do not have equal and fair representation.
Voters elect Representatives and Senators to the State Legislature to act on their behalf, but committee chairmen and those in leadership can and do stop votes from being made on many bills, if those submitting legislation do not agree to ‘play ball’ with the leadership.
For example, a legislator might file a bill that a certain controlling special interest group does not want, then a Committee Chairman or Leadership will not allow it to be heard, because they are beholden to that special interest. That kind of heavy-handed action should be prohibited and is a corruption of one of the most important aspects of our political system – representative government.
The group will release more information about their organization and plans to circulate the statewide petition after the holidays.
