GOA Activists Win Skirmishes in Two Key Areas

GOA Fighting to Repeal One of the Most Insidious Obama Gun Bans Still on the Books

“Other gun-rights groups, such as the National Rifle Association, have not publicly weighed in on this [anti-gun health care] issue, leaving it to GOA. It was GOA which successfully pushed for Sen. Reid’s amendment — one of the few conservative things Reid did in years — back in 2009.” — Liberty Headlines, July 14, 2017

Rand Paul Tells GOA He Wants to Remove the Anti-Gun Aspects of the Health Care Bill

Dear friend:

If you’ve been watching the news, you know that the U.S. Senate could vote on a “repeal and replace” health care bill, as early as next week.

But as always, this poses a certain danger for gun owners.

After all, I’m sure you know how medical information has been increasingly used in this country to impact our Second Amendment rights.

Just ask the 257,000 law-abiding vets who have lost their guns because they went to the VA for treatment.

Given this dismal record, it shouldn’t be hard to convince congressional Republicans who ran as supporters of the Second Amendment to make sure that their ObamaCare “repeal and replace” bill does not adversely impact guns.

So GOA is insisting that any comprehensive federal health package must make sure of three things:

1) Insurers cannot ask about gun ownership, or feed that information into a federal database, or discriminate or deny insurance to gun owners;

2) Federal mandates, that doctors keep digital records in a federal health database, cannot be used to force doctors to compile a federal health database; and,

3) The ATF must not be allowed to troll the federal health database for names that it could submit to the NICS list.

Sen. Rand Paul to Introduce Pro-gun Amendment

The good news is this:  Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) is prepared to offer an amendment on the Senate floor which would take care of all of these problems.

Now, Senator Paul opposes the entire health care “fix” bill.

But given that Senate Republicans may allow unlimited amendments to be offered to the bill, Senator Paul’s office has told Gun Owners of America that he is willing to offer an amendment to protect gun owners from the gun-related concerns in ObamaCare “Lite.”

It’s not that difficult to do.  In 2009, Harry Reid’s manager’s amendment took care of the first and second problems.

And it would take a small technical correction to make sure that the Reid amendment continues to apply to the new options created by Congress’ new “repeal and replace” bill.

But, thus far, congressional Republicans have failed to do those small things.  And their failure to act leaves us “hoping,” but with no assurance that this is the case.

In 2009, we predicted that the Obama administration would eventually use the database, that was institutionalized by the ObamaCare bill, to troll programs like Social Security for the names of people with PTSD or people with guardians — and would use that list to take away their guns.

It took only six years for this prediction to become a reality.

And, although a resolution passed under the Congressional Review Act probably prevents this from happening again, there is nothing to prevent the national health database for being trolled for PTSD, ADHD, and Alzheimer’s.

(This means, of course, that many seniors could forget about passing on their guns as an inheritance to their children and grandchildren.)

The bottom line is this:  These are easy fixes.

And Senator Paul has stepped up to the plate to make them.

But he needs the support of other senators — especially those who claim to be pro-gun.

So please contact your senators, and urge them to support the Paul amendment to the ObamaCare “repeal and replace” bill — so that gun owners are protected.

The pre-written messages are especially designed to appeal to both Republican and Democrat Senators — and the email to Democrat Senators will point out that their former leader, Harry Reid, had previously endorsed similar language to the Paul amendment.

Thank you for taking action.

New and Improved Suppressor Legislation in Congress!

As you know, Gun Owners of America strongly opposes all types of gun control — including the National Firearms Act and the NICS background check system.

And now there’s a bill that will deal a major blow to both of those ugly marks on the Second Amendment.

Senators Mike Lee and Mike Crapo, along with Representative Steve King introduced the “Silencers Helping Us Save Hearing Act” or SHUSH Act in both Senate and House (S. 1505 and H.R. 3139).

But you may be thinking: Isn’t there already a suppressor bill in Congress? Yes, there is. It’s the Hearing Protection Act which was has been introduced back in January.

Help GOA push more bills like the SHUSH Act – become a Patriot member today!

But the new SHUSH Act expands firearm freedom further than the Hearing Protection Act ever did.

The SHUSH Act would not only remove suppressors from the NFA, it would legally treat suppressors as a firearm accessory, which means you could buy a suppressor as you could buy a scope — without a background check.

The fact is that suppressors are little more than elaborate metal tubes. There is no reason — other than blind hatred of gun owners — why these devices should be regulated at all.

So let’s make some noise on Capitol Hill about the SHUSH Act. Contact your Senators and Representatives to urge them to cosponsors S. 1505 and H.R. 3139.

P.S. GOA is working hard in the halls of Congress to get more cosponsors for the SHUSH Act. But when you flood their offices with emails, it makes congressional staffers listen a little closer in our meetings. So please contact your legislators in favor of the SHUSH Act now.

Gun Banners Trying to Hijack the Tragedy in Virginia

GOA Responds to Today’s Tragedy, Counters Anti-Gun Shrills for More Gun Control

Dear Friend:

No doubt you’ve heard the sad news today — the tragic shooting in Alexandria, Virginia, which is just 20 minutes from our offices here at Gun Owners of America.

Several people were shot and wounded, one of them being House Majority Whip Steve Scalise.

There were others, including brave law enforcement officers, who were wounded as well.

We have been praying for their speedy recovery and that God would grant their families peace during this time.

Already, anti-gun mouthpieces are trying to politicize this event.  And they are stepping over the injured bodies to call for more gun control.

Shannon Watts, who heads up a group for Billionaire Michael Bloomberg, said the answer to this tragedy is “not more guns and fewer gun laws.”

In other words, she wants more gun control.

Anti-gun journalist David Frum said the problem was that Virginia has:

— No background checks [which, by the way, is a lie];

— No licensing [which is a lie];

— No registration [which is a partial lie];

— No permit required for concealed carry of long guns [which really, is a stupid thing to say because no one actually conceal carries long guns].

Frum also faults Virginia’s laws for protecting “Open carry [of] long guns & handguns.”

A long list of things to blame.  But nowhere does he actually blame the shooter — who, by the way, was reportedly a radical, left-wing, Bernie Sanders supporter who frequently railed against Republicans.

And finally, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said in response that there are “too many guns on the street” and then went on to call for more background checks.

McAuliffe even said that “we lose 93 million Americans a day to gun violence.”

It was only after a reporter observed that this level of murder would eliminate the entire population of the U.S. within four days that McAuliffe retreated from that statement.

Of course, what McAuliffe and these other gun haters all miss is that no matter how many guns you ban or restrict, any individual with hatred in his heart can use any item to kill huge numbers of people.

Have they already forgotten that more people were killed recently on the London bridge with just knives and cars?

Have they forgotten that more people were killed with a truck in Nice, France? Over 80 people were killed.

All these gun haters willfully ignore this simple truth — when bad guys, filled with hate, try to kill, guns are the best way to stop them.

Thank God for the brave officers who heroically risked their lives.

Reportedly, the officer who actually took down the active shooter was himself injured as well.

And in doing so, that brave officer prevented a Mass Shooting.

This is the Second Mass Shooting prevented in as many months.

The previous one was deterred last month at a sports bar in Arlington, Texas, where a concealed carry holder shot and killed an active shooter.

After the concealed carrier opened fire, not one additional person was injured.

And police credited him with saving countless lives.

This is why Gun Owners of America has pushed for Constitutional Carry in the states – and for Congress to pass national reciprocity legislation.

You can see our most recent action alert on this issue here.  We are very close to getting the number of co-sponsors we need to pass concealed carry reciprocity, which is why we are pushing so hard.

Good guys with guns will save lives, but attempts by the anti-gun Left to disarm citizens will only make us less safe.

I will keep you updated on additional attacks to our rights in upcoming alerts.

In Liberty,

Erich Pratt
Executive Director

P.S. The anti-gun Left is using this shooting for a full assault on our gun rights.  But GOA will continue to fight their efforts alongside of you.
