Back in the 1960’s my parents fought valiantly to block federal aid to education. They were way ahead of their time but it was my first exposure to politics and remains vivid in my memory even though I was in grade school at the time. Clearly they were not successful back then, but they were right! Local control is always best and when you accept federal money there are strings attached. If they seemed minor back then, they have escalated severely in the intervening years.
What is SBHC? It is School-Based Health Care. How do we know they are planning to expand it? They have formed ‘interim studies’ which is often a precursor to telling you how badly you need this thing they are planning to propose! There is good news and bad news there. The good news is we know it is coming and can educate and prepare to defeat it. The bottom line is if schools handle your child’s health care, then you don’t. The additional good news is that Senator Dusty Deevers is planning to introduce legislation blocking and hopefully reducing this nightmare legislation. Deborah Campbell lives in Oklahoma and is a wealth of information on this topic. She is working with Senator Deevers on the proposed legislation and reviewing the interim studies which have occurred.
