2024 Legislative Scorecard Sample
February 5, 2024 – Today is the first day of the 2024 Oklahoma Legislative Session. Before any votes are cast for legislation filed for this session, OKGrassroots is providing a sampling of bills and how they will be measured according to the 2023 OKGOP Platform. The scorecard will be released after the session ends and the bills have been signed by the governor.
As with the 2023 OKG Scorecard, the bills considered will be the bills which make it through the entire process and become law. This seems to be the best method for revealing the priorities of the current legislature.
This scorecard is not a measure of the most conservative or the most liberal-left legislators. It is a measure of legislation against the 2023 OKGOP Platform and how each legislator voted. You can find the OKGOP Platform HERE. If you have suggested Platform changes, please attend a precinct meeting in your county to submit your suggestions. The direction of the Oklahoma Republican Party begins with the individual voter in his own precinct.
It is necessary for citizens to hold to a standard those who are elected to represent us. That standard is the OKGOP Platform. Currently, the platform supports:
· limiting government rather than expanding government
· reducing taxes rather than increasing spending when revenue is up
· removing regulation which inhibits the free market rather than adding agencies and programs which increase bureaucracy
· many other Constitutional conservative principles
Most Oklahomans are registered as Republicans and the majority in both legislative chambers reflects this. It is imperative that our elected Republican legislators abide by the values which got them elected. It is our responsibility as Republican voters to hold them accountable.
If you would like to know where your elected legislators or candidates for office stand on the OKGOP Platform, ask them to “mark up the platform”. Here is the OKGOP Platform in an easy to complete format.
NOTES ABOUT THE OKGrassroots SCORECARD:
Bills will be scored based on the new or altered language in the law, not the existing language. Be sure to examine the STRIKETHOUGH (being removed) or UNDERLINED (being added) language of each bill. If the bill is adding ALL new language, it will state NEW LAW at the beginning of the new section. In those cases, the new language is not underlined.
EXCUSED VOTES: We understand that sometimes a legislator missing a vote is unavoidable. It is up to the voters to determine if missing a vote is acceptable to them. For the purpose of supporting the Republican Platform, the objective is to cast a vote. Therefore, if a legislator misses a vote, it will be marked against the platform.
