On May 3-4, 2024, we’ll be gathering in Oklahoma City, OK to vote on Republican National Committeeman and National Committeewoman. We will have an opportunity to pass rules changes sent in from the precincts and counties to the OKGOP Rules. A rule change that many Republicans in this state are asking for is to remove the 150+ Republican legislators and elected officials from the State Committee. Here are some things to consider on why this is a vital change to our rules:

  • REPUBLICANS MUST HOLD THEIR ELECTED LEGISLATORS ACCOUNTABLE TO THE REPUBLICAN PLATFORM
  • LEGISLATORS SHOULD NOT BE AUTOMATIC MEMBERS OF THE STATE COMMITTEE WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HOLDING THEM ACCOUNTABLE
  • THIS DOES NOT PREVENT THEM FROM PARTICIPATING IN THE GOP AND BEING ELECTED TO OTHER GOP POSITIONS

REPUBLICAN FORM OF GOVERNANCE:

  • The OKGOP Rules establish a Republican form of governance, with authority flowing from the individual, to the precinct level, to the county and state, by proper representation of the people.
  • Elected officials are elected to serve the people, not to rule over the people.
  • The current composition of the State Committee is inconsistent with this Republican principle because it places all elected officials who are registered Republicans (even those who routinely violate the Republican Platform) onto the State Committee, placing them in a position to determine whether or not they should be held accountable.

THE FUNCTION OF THE STATE COMMITTEE:

  • The current composition of the State Committee reduces the power of the people by giving positions to established elected officials.
  • The OKGOP State Committee and the elected officials should be separate and distinct offices, to prevent inconsistent loyalties and undue influences.
  • The OKGOP is intended to hold elected officials accountable to the OKGOP Platform and therefore it would be a conflict of interest for those being held accountable to hold a position in the body providing accountability.
  • A large voting block with narrow interests can prevent the State Committee from conducting the critical business of the Party by withholding their attendance.

HISTORY:

  • In 2023, the OKGOP State Convention voted to prohibit proxies, after seeing proxies be grossly abused through proxy harvesting by elected officials to benefit their own interests over the will of the people. This was the first step in correcting the abuses within the State Committee.
  • The final step to correct the membership must be removing the Republican legislators, statewide elected officials, and US Congressional delegation, and thereby placing power back into the hands of the proper representatives sent from the counties to the State Committee.

We need to return the power to the people of this state! By voting for this rule change, we can do that effectively. Please join us in Voting to Take Legislators Off the State Committee!
