There seems to be no real consensus on the ‘right’ answer to either of the state questions on the ballot this year! So I am going to give you the actual wording on the ballot from my sample ballot. Then I will give you my summary and how I intend to vote. Then I will give you all the great memes on the state questions that I have been able to find. They all contain interesting information worth considering. If the source is known it will be given with the meme often it is on the meme itself.

My sample ballot (page 2 partial)looks like this (you can find your entire sample ballot here):

State Question 845 – changes the Judicial Nominating Commission Structure. If you believe it is an improvement to the existing structure, then vote yes. The Senate author was Sen. Todd Gollihare (not exactly a conservative champion).

State Question 847 – limits the annual growth in fair cash value for most real property to 5% or 3% for homesteads and agricultural land. It is a complex measure. The Senate author was Senate President Pro Tempore Lonnie Paxton (among others). The House author was House Speaker Kyle Hilbert (among others).

A little history: State Question 843 which would have eliminated property taxes was kept off the ballot by our Oklahoma Supreme Court (sadly)!

My summary analysis (for all my voting recommendations for November 3rd see here):

State Question 845 – Changes to Judicial Nominating Commission Appointments – I am a clear NO on this one. This one hinges on if you believe the changes being made are better or worse that the status quo. I believe they will result in more lawyers on the commission and that alone makes it a NO for me.

State Question 847 – Reduces Property Taxes for Seniors – I am a YES on this one. I agree with the No folks and do not feel that this is the proper way to handle this matter. However, when the Oklahoma Supreme Court in their infinite wisdom decided we the people could not eliminate property tax by not allowing SQ 843 on the ballot, then I got really mad at the process and feel that at least we can try to reduce them NOW!

My bottom line on voting for especially state questions – “When in doubt, Vote NO!’

And now for the fun part – here come the memes!
